Savage Night
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (November, 1991)
Author: Jim Thompson
Average review score:

Reviewed by Alan Gerrard.
Thompson's 'Savage Night' begins as a typical syndicate novel; the story of Carl Bigelow, a diminutive contract killer who's hired to murder a once well placed figure in the syndicate, who has now turned informant. Bigelow is hired by 'The Man' to silence the informent. But he mustn't make it look like a contract killing otherwise it will prompt the politicans to organise a clean up of crime in the city, and that wouldn't be good for The Man's business. So the order is clear: make it look like an accident. There is an interesting series of twists and sub-plots. In true noir-ish traditions there are two women in bigelow's life, but which one has been hired to take care of him? An interesting novel with a rather disturbing ending. It was so disturbing that it haunted me for many weeks after I'd finished reading it. Again, further proof that Thompson was the true master of the maverick crime novel. A worthy book indeed.

Savages (Wilderness, 30)
Published in Paperback by Leisure Books (May, 2000)
Author: David Thompson
Average review score:

Zach King adventure in the Wilderness series.
Savages is a great addition to the Wilderness series. Nate King's son Zach and his fiancee Louisa, go to St. Louis so Zach can meet her relatives. They have troubles, and they find out how corrupt cities can be. Nate King is mentioned in the book, but isn't in it. Zach King is grown up now, and faces life on his own. This adds to the series, and doesn't take anything away. I liked reading about St. Louis and the author David Robbins does a great job of capturing the feel of that era. Enjoyable book in the high quality Wilderness series.

Scotland: Land of Mountains
Published in Paperback by Voyageur Press (June, 1900)
Authors: Colin Baxter and D. B. A. Thompson
Average review score:

An excellent introduction to Scotland's mountains
I've never been to Scotland but I feel almost as though I have been by seeing these photos. Every one is spectacular in detail and depth; you could probably enlarge them two or three times and still have good resolution.

But that is what one expects from Colin Baxter. I first 'discovered' him last year when I bought one of his calendars. Being thoroughly impressed with his work there I decided to get something more expansive... like a book. And this is certainly a good choice, for all ages. Not only does it include the numerous beautiful photos -- most of which are aerial panoramas -- but it also includes text on each region and its features. So there is fine detail not only in the pictures but in everything that accompanies them.

It's so inspirational you'll want to buy a plane ticket to see the scenery in person as soon as possible.

A Season of Strange Dreams
Published in Paperback by Bewrite Books (February, 2003)
Author: C. S. Thompson
Average review score:

A Season of Strange Dreams
C.S.Thompson summons up a darkly poetic masterpiece in A Season of Strange Dreams. Enter the life of Jim Rankin, the Nightwalker, who slips between the fabric of the dark city of Nottamun and the blackness of a dreamworld known as the Fringe. As the border of the two mysterious worlds loses definition, the Nightwalker travels through violence, memories and self-judgement to find a way to salvation. Thompson's writing is brilliant. The imagery of his words is equal to the paintings of H.R.Giger; horrible, cruel and seductive. If you enjoyed Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, read A Season of Strange Dreams.
